Attachment of benefits or liability order

Attachment of benefits can be applied when there are arrears on Council Tax and the debtor is in receipt of benefits such as Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance.

If you fall into arrears with your Council Tax Payments, your local Council may obtain a Liability Order which will allow them to apply to the Department of Work and Pensions to deduct money to repay your debt directly from any benefits you receive, including Income Support and Job Seekers Allowance.

The current deduction rate for Attachment of Benefits is £12.20 per month. However, this amount is reviewed annually and is subject to change by individual councils.

This monthly amount will be deducted from your benefits until the arrears are fully paid off.
